Food Allergies

Dogs and cats can develop allergies to food just like people. The immune system triggers a negative response, usually to a protein in their regular diet. The most common offenders are the most common ingredients in dog or cat food, namely beef, dairy, chicken, lamb, eggs, corn, wheat and soy. According to most veterinarians, a food allergy typically occurs when the animal has been on the same diet for an extended period. Early signs of allergic reactions may include severe itching, accompanied by what appears to be a skin rash, hair loss, chronic ear infections, diarrhea or vomiting.

In the process of trying to diagnose the food allergy, most veterinarians recommend an elimination diet while switching to a novel protein source. Hypoallergenic dog and cat treats from Boulder Dog Food Company LLC or Boulder Cat Food Company LLC can help in the transition to a new diet given that most of our hypoallergenic treats are 100% pure meat or 100% fish with no additives, by-products, GMO's or artificial preservatives.

Our all-meat bison treats, in particular, are often found to be good choices for animals suffering from food allergies since bison is thought to be less antigenic, or less likely to produce an immune response. Moreover, bison is not found in most commercial dog or cat food, so animals are not likely to have been overexposed to it.

Food Intolerances

Many pet treats and pet foods contain large amounts of cereal grains, the most common being corn, wheat, barley, and rice. Not only are these grains a frequent source of allergies, there may also be a correlation with food intolerances since they are more difficult to digest. Canines and felines lack sufficient enzymes to easily digest these high carbohydrate grains which may result in gastrointestinal problems as well as intestinal inflammation or celiac disease. Cereal grains are also a potential source of pesticide and herbicide residues.

Cats are strict carnivores which means they are designed to get their protein from meat not plants. Hence their nutritional needs are very different from humans or dogs, omnivores who derive some nutritional support from plant-based proteins. Our hypoallergenic dog and cat treats are 100% meat - bison, chicken, chicken liver, turkey, or 100% fish - squid, shrimp, tilapia, or salmon. Did you know a cat's natural prey in the wild is 70-75% water? So cats should have plenty of clean water to drink with their food.
